Ashwini Vaishnaw Unveils Major Railway Projects to Transform Pune’s Rail Connectivity

India's railway infrastructure is witnessing a rapid transformation under the leadership of Hon’ble Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw Ji. Continuing this momentum, he recently flagged off the inaugural journey of the Pune–Sainagar Shirdi Express and laid the foundation stone for the Yard Remodelling Project at Pune Railway Station. The occasion also marked the launch of the Pune–Danapur Amrit Bharat Express from Hadapsar, further strengthening rail connectivity for passengers across the region.

The initiatives are part of the Government of India’s broader vision to modernize railway infrastructure, improve passenger convenience, and enhance transportation efficiency. Speaking at the event, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the growing transportation needs of Pune, one of Maharashtra’s fastest-growing urban centers. With a population exceeding 70 lakh and a steadily increasing number of railway passengers, Pune requires a world-class railway ecosystem capable of supporting future growth.

To address these demands, the government has planned a comprehensive expansion of Pune Railway Station. The project, estimated to cost around ₹600 crore, includes the construction of new platforms, improved entry and exit facilities, and significant upgrades to existing infrastructure. In addition, a new terminal at Alandi and a Coaching Maintenance Depot at Ghorpadi will be developed to support increased train operations and maintenance requirements.

These projects are expected to significantly enhance the operational capacity of Pune’s railway network. According to Shri Vaishnaw, the upgraded infrastructure will enable the operation of approximately 20 additional train services from Pune, helping to meet rising passenger demand while improving overall travel convenience.

The launch of the Pune–Sainagar Shirdi Express and the Pune–Danapur Amrit Bharat Express reflects the government's commitment to expanding railway services and connecting more regions through affordable and efficient transportation. These new train services are expected to benefit thousands of passengers by offering better travel options and improved accessibility.

During his address, the Railway Minister also emphasized the scale of investment being made in Maharashtra’s railway sector. He revealed that railway projects worth nearly ₹2 lakh crore are currently being implemented across the state. This massive investment is aimed at strengthening railway infrastructure, increasing network capacity, and improving passenger amenities.

A major component of this modernization drive is the redevelopment of railway stations. Shri Vaishnaw informed that redevelopment work is progressing rapidly at 132 railway stations across Maharashtra. These projects are designed to transform stations into modern transport hubs equipped with better facilities, enhanced accessibility, and improved passenger experiences.

Looking ahead, the Railway Minister shared an ambitious vision for high-speed rail connectivity in the region. He stated that future Bullet Train projects could dramatically reduce travel times between key cities. Once implemented, the journey between Pune and Mumbai could take just 48 minutes, while travel between Pune and Hyderabad could be completed in approximately 2 hours and 8 minutes.

Such advancements are expected to bring significant economic benefits by improving connectivity, reducing travel time, and enhancing logistics efficiency. Better transportation infrastructure not only facilitates easier movement of people but also supports trade, investment, tourism, and industrial growth.

The projects launched in Pune represent another important step toward building a modern, efficient, and future-ready railway network. Under the leadership of Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Indian Railways continues to evolve into a stronger engine of economic development, connecting communities and creating new opportunities across the country.
